Throwaway Email

A throwaway email is a real, working inbox you use once and abandon. Create one in one click, receive your verification email, then walk away — it expires on its own.

What Is a Throwaway Email Address?

A throwaway email address — also written throwaway mail or throw-away email, and also called a burner email, burner mail, trash email, or disposable address — is a temporary inbox created for a specific, short-term purpose. You use it to satisfy an email verification requirement, then discard it. The address receives real email, it just doesn't last. When it expires, everything in it is deleted permanently.

The primary reason to use a throwaway address is the same reason you might use a burner phone number: to give someone a working point of contact without exposing your real identity. The service you sign up for gets a valid address — it can send email to it, verify it, and store it. It just can't reach you through it once the inbox expires.

When to Use a Throwaway Email

Good situations for throwaway email:

  • Signing up for a service to access a single piece of gated content, after which you'll never use the service again
  • Registering for a free trial you're evaluating, before you know whether you'll pay
  • Creating accounts in a staging or development environment where addresses need to be real but persistence doesn't matter
  • Registering on unfamiliar sites where you're not confident about their data handling practices
  • Downloading software or apps that require an email address before presenting a free tier

Situations where throwaway email is the wrong choice:

  • Any account where you'll need email-based password recovery in the future
  • Any account that sends important notifications — purchase receipts, shipping updates, account changes
  • Two-factor authentication methods tied to the email address
  • Accounts you plan to use regularly and want to maintain control over

How TempMailGrab's Throwaway Inbox Works

When you open TempMailGrab, a throwaway inbox is generated immediately using a cryptographically random prefix — something like k7m2qp@tempmailgrab.com. The randomness matters: it makes the address non-guessable, so only the party you share it with can send mail to it during its lifetime.

Incoming mail is handled by Cloudflare Email Routing, which receives SMTP traffic on behalf of tempmailgrab.com and routes it to a Cloudflare Worker within milliseconds. The Worker parses the email, stores it in D1 (Cloudflare's edge SQLite), and pushes a real-time notification to your browser via a WebSocket connection maintained by a Durable Object. The result: email arrives in your browser the moment the sending server delivers it, without any polling or page refresh.

After 24 hours, a scheduled cleanup Worker marks the inbox as expired and permanently deletes the inbox record, all email records, and any associated attachments from R2 storage. There is no archive, no backup, no trace.

Throwaway Email for Development and Testing

Automated test suites that cover email-based flows — user registration, password reset, invitation acceptance, magic-link login — need a way to receive email programmatically. The naive approach is using a single shared test address, which causes test interference when multiple tests run in parallel. Throwaway email addresses fix this: create a new address per test, verify it, and clean up after the test finishes.

TempMailGrab's developer API makes this straightforward: POST /api/v1/inbox creates an inbox and returns the address, GET /api/v1/inbox/{id}/messages polls for incoming mail, and the extracted_otp field in the message response gives you the verification code without parsing. Webhooks are available if you prefer push over pull. See the API documentation and the automated testing guide for complete examples.

Automate inboxes with the API

Prefer to script it? Generate disposable inboxes and read auto-parsed OTPs & verification links programmatically — built for QA, test automation, and bots. The same private inboxes, over a clean REST API.

# 1. Create a private inbox
curl -X POST https://tempmailgrab.com/api/v1/inbox \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TMG_API_KEY"
# → { "id": "inb_…", "address": "a1b2c3d4e5f6@tempmailgrab.com" }

# 2. Poll for mail — the OTP + verification links are auto-extracted
curl https://tempmailgrab.com/api/v1/inbox/$ID/messages \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TMG_API_KEY"
# → { "messages": [{ "extracted_otp": "123456", "extracted_links": [ … ] }] }

Frequently Asked Questions

How is "throwaway email" different from "disposable email"?

They are the same thing. Different people use different terms — throwaway email, burner email, disposable email, temp mail, trash mail — but they all refer to a temporary inbox that expires and doesn't require sign-up.

Does the throwaway address actually receive email?

Yes. It is a real, working inbox. Email sent to it is delivered and visible in TempMailGrab within seconds of arrival — as long as the sending server does not block the tempmailgrab.com domain.

How long does a throwaway inbox last?

24 hours in the browser. Developer API accounts can configure TTLs up to 72 hours.

Can I create multiple throwaway addresses at once?

Browser users get one inbox per session. Developer API users can create multiple inboxes programmatically.

Can I recover my throwaway inbox after it expires?

No. Expired inboxes are permanently deleted. TempMailGrab does not archive expired data.

Do major services block throwaway email?

Some do. Google, Facebook, Apple, and many financial services run addresses against disposable domain blocklists. If a service rejects tempmailgrab.com, it will typically say so on the form during submission.

Is throwaway email safe to use?

Safe for its intended purpose (absorbing spam and avoiding identity exposure), yes. Not safe for important accounts where you need ongoing email access or password recovery.

Can someone else access my throwaway inbox?

The inbox is session-scoped — only the browser session that created it can view the emails. There is no public directory of active inboxes.

Can I send email from a throwaway address?

No. TempMailGrab is a receive-only service. The throwaway address can receive mail but cannot send it.

What is the difference between a throwaway email and an email alias?

An email alias (like Apple Hide My Email or SimpleLogin) forwards email to your real inbox. A throwaway email is an independent temporary inbox — no forwarding, no link to your real address.
