What Is an OTP and How Does Temp Mail Help?
Every time you verify an email address, confirm a sign-up, or authorize a login from a new device, you are using a one-time password. Understanding how OTPs work explains why temp mail services designed around them are so much faster to use.
What is an OTP?
A one-time password (OTP) is a numeric or alphanumeric code that is valid for a single use and expires after a short window (typically 5-15 minutes). Unlike a regular password, an OTP cannot be reused — once it is consumed or expires, it is gone.
Where do email OTPs come from?
When a service sends you a verification code by email, it generates a random token, stores it in their database with a timestamp and expiry, and sends it to your email address. When you submit the code, they look it up, verify it matches, verify it has not expired, and mark it as used. After that, the code is invalid even if submitted again.
How TempMailGrab handles OTPs
TempMailGrab uses a context-weighted extraction algorithm to automatically identify the one-time code in an incoming email. When a message arrives, the system:
- Scans the email body (plain text and HTML) for 4-8 digit numeric sequences
- Scores each candidate based on surrounding context — proximity to words like "code", "OTP", "verification", "passcode"
- Penalizes false positives — year-shaped numbers (2024, 2025), order references, phone numbers
- Displays the highest-scoring candidate prominently in the inbox with a one-click copy button
In practice, you see your OTP code highlighted in the inbox within seconds of the email arriving — without opening the email, without reading, without copy-pasting from a body of text. The extraction works on over 95% of standard OTP emails from major services.
The time saving in practice
The conventional flow: open email client → find the email → open it → locate the code → copy it → switch tabs → paste. That is 5-8 manual steps plus the time waiting for the email in a real inbox.
With TempMailGrab: the email arrives in real time, the code is already extracted, click to copy, paste. Two steps. For developers running test suites, the API delivers extracted_otp as a JSON field — zero manual steps.
